It’s been a long time coming but I think I’ve finally picked one.
It’s not my favorite song of all time. But it is my favorite track from my favorite album of all time, if you follow me.
In 1994 I bought 24 Hour Revenge Therapy by Jawbreaker. I’ve listened to it pretty consistently ever since. Sure there was a time when it was all I listened to, and there have also been huge spans of time where I’ve neglected it all together. Point being, it’s always been my “go to” soundtrack. Good mood, bad mood whatever.. it’s always scratched the itch. When you talk to people about music they inevitably ask you your “favorite” band. Mine, (like most) changes a lot so I’m hesitant to answer. However if you ask me my favorite album I will tell you it’s 24 Hour.
Sitting in my apartment the other day listening to it again I realized something. I knew that I’d always loved lyrics (I can’t fucking write them and believe me I’ve tried), but when I listen to stuff I like to know the “meaning” of the song. Sometimes I like to know the actual meaning as the author intended, most times I like to know what it means to me.
Over the years this has caused me to fall in love with the same song I already knew I loved for all new reasons. I think it’s similar to why some people believe their horoscope.
Today that song was Ache. Always liked it, hopefully always will, but I heard it today with new ears…and it was amazing.
